Magnesium Chloride for Erosion Control, Road Stabilization,
and Dust Control

Dust-Loc™, a high-purity magnesium chloride (MgCl2) product, is used for road stabilization, soil stabilization, and dust control. As a hygroscopic compound, the magnesium chloride in Dust-Loc™ attracts moisture from the air and resists evaporation. Dust-Loc™, offered by Desert Mountain Corporation, binds fine dust and aggregate together to ensure dust-free, stable surfaces.

Dust-Loc Features and Benefits

  • Prevents blowing dust from fine particles in road aggregate
  • Improves road quality with fewer potholes and less washboarding
  • Reduces road maintenance and saves road department budget funds
  • Successful stabilization and dust control on many soil types
  • Reduces dust particulates to PM10 Standard

Good Road Preparation = Success!

The better the road surface is prepared before a Dust-Loc application equals a longer lasting application. Reviewing these five steps make sure that our customers get the most for their money:

  1. Quality and composition of aggregate
  2. Adequate moisture in road
  3. Compaction of soil
  4. Road preparation
  5. Application rate

Performance Benefits of Dust-Loc™

Dust-Loc, our reliable magnesium chloride product, provides excellent performance on many environmental challenges being faced. Such factors as temperature, humidity level, precipitation, and especially soil, aggregate type, and aggregate gradation will impact the success a road project.

The Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), in its Guidelines for Cost-Effective Use and Application of Dust Palliatives found that “magnesium chloride, while also hygroscopic, remains so at much higher temperatures and lower relative humidity than calcium chloride and therefore may be more suitable to dry climates.”

Mag Typical Analysis

Environmental, Health, & Toxicity

Dust-Loc (magnesium chloride) is the least harmful of common dust suppressants to vegetation and groundwater according to independent studies conducted by the US Department of Agriculture. It is non-irritating and safer to handle and won’t cause burning or stinging associated with some of the other dust control products. RoadSaver is free of toxic metals and substances, is used as an ice control agent, and also as a fertilizer for crops such as turf and small grains.

Preparing a Road for Dust-Loc

Properly preparing the road before applying dust control or soil stabilization measures can extend the project’s lifespan by two to three times. Investing extra time and effort initially will prevent the need for frequent re-applications.

Recommended techniques include blading the surface, removing potholes and washboarding, ensuring the roadway has the correct crown, and pre-wetting the application area.

"Regular application of Dust-Loc as part of an ongoing dust control program can lead to reduced application rates over time. Consistent use also helps minimize road base loss."
